What is it?

The government are committed to improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. Funding has been allocated to primary schools and is ring-fenced, it can only be used to make additional and sustained improvements to the quality of PE and Sport offered in school.

This means we can use the premium to

• Develop or add to the PE and sport activities that school already offers
• Make improvements now that will benefit children joining the school in future years

We expect that improvements will be seen in

• The engagement of children in regular physical activity and improvement in children’s well-being
• The profile of sport will be raised
• Staff confidence, knowledge and skills will improve
• Children will have opportunities to participate in a broader range of sports
• Children will have opportunities to take part in competitive sport

School can use funding to

• Hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
• Provide training and resources to help teach PE more effectively
• Introduce new sports
• Encourage participation in sport
• Run sport competitions
• Increase pupil’s participation in School Games
• Run sports activities with other schools

Who is accountable?

• Schools are accountable for publishing how they have spent, and will spend, their funding on their school website
• Schools must include details about the impact the funding has had
• 5% of schools will be audited per year to ensure they are being compliant with their spending
• Ofsted will report on the use of the PE Funding under leadership and management
